The land on which Scarborough sits today, is said to have been inhabited as far back as 8000 B.C., but the first known settlers were the Seneca natives in the 1600’s.

The Seneca people were forced out by the Mississaugas tribe, who would later themselves be removed by British settlers in the late 1700’s. It wasn’t until 1796, that the area was officially “settled” and referred to as Scarborough.

Originally referred to as “Glasgow” for it’s Scottish residents, the former city of Scarborough, Ontario, was later renamed by Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada.

She felt that the Scarborough Bluffs along Lake Ontario reminded her of the limestone cliffs of her native Scarborough, England. In 1850, the area was incorporated and recognized as a township.

In 1953, Scarborough was included in what is known as Metropolitan Toronto, and was later incorporated and recognized as a “borough” of Toronto in 1967, and then officially became a city in 1983. This would be short lived, as in 1998, it was amalgamated with Toronto, losing its “City” status.

Though no longer a recognized as a city, but as the “Eastern District” of the Greater Metropolitan area of Toronto. (GTA), Scarborough still maintains a unique identity with an extremely diverse population, that as of 2006, was listed in excess of 600,000.

Still recognized as a municipality, Scarborough is known for it’s broad and diverse culture due to the abundance of new immigrants that make it home.

It has developed many nicknames including Scarberia, a reference to comparing it to “Siberia” in it’s eastern proximity from the downtown core. Also referred to some as “Scarlem”, which to some is a racist term, referring to it as the “Harlem” of the GTA. Scarborough Village or Scarborough Heights refers to a small community in the area of the former city.

The headquarters for Honda Canada and Toyota Canada are located in Scarborough. Other major companies which have operations in the area include Royal Doulton, YellowPages, Novopharm Ltd, CTVglobemedia and Atlantic Packaging Products Ltd. The Scarborough Town Centre is the largest commercial and entertainment district east of Yonge St. in the GTA, providing a wide array of shopping and dining options in a convenient location.

All this is located next to the Scarborough Civic Centre and Albert Campbell Square, and includes a “Scarborough Walk of Fame” recognizing past and present prominent members of the community.

Famed comedians and Hollywood stars such as Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, the late Jon Candy along with rock group Barenaked Ladies and world champion race car driver Paul Tracy are celebrities who are also native Scarbarians.

The Toronto Hunt Club and Scarborough Golf and Country Club are the 2 most notable of the public and private courses available to residents. For other sports, the NIKE Malvern Sports Complex offers a basketball court, soccer pitch and running track.
