Pickering Township was originally established in 1791, as part of the former York County. Pickering received it’s name from the town of Pickering, North Yorkshire in England.
Originally, Pickering was a farm based community, with local mills also operating by utilizing the local water supply to generate water power. The Rouge River was also used as a harbor to transport goods to Toronto, and other destinations located among the Great Lakes.
Then in 1810, the construction of the Kingston Road connecting from Kingston to Toronto gave more means to export goods from the area, which along with the Grand Trunk Railway, helped in the initial economic development of the area. In 1811, the municipality of Pickering was incorporated.
The community of Pickering would continue to develop along the Kingston Road, and in 1941 during the Second World War, the community of Ajax was developed as a munitions plant in the eastern part of Pickering. Ajax would dissolve from Pickering in 1950 to become it’s own separate community, and 3 years later, the Village of Pickering would formally incorporate.
Things really started to boom for the Pickering area after World War II, with the extension of Highway 401, giving direct access to Toronto, and the introduction of the Pickering Nuclear Generation Station.
