Oakville, Ontario is considered an affluent suburb and part of The Greater Toronto Area, (GTA), with an estimated population in excess of 165,000.
Located on the shore of Lake Ontario. Oakville is conveniently distanced mid way between Toronto and Hamilton on Highway 403. Oakville is celebrating it’s 150th birthday this year. (1857-2007)
Oakville’s origins begin in 1793 when the land along Dundas Street, (aka Highway 5), was originally surveyed for the purpose of implementing a military road. Later around 1805, the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada purchased the parcel of land between Etobicoke and Hamilton from the Mississaguas Indian Tribe, with the exception of the shore of the Credit River, Sixteen Mile Creek and Twelve Mile Creek (now known as Bronte Creek).
The British then colonized around Lake Ontario in the Dundas Street area. In 1820, the Crown would purchasing the remaining land (approx 960 acres), around the creeks that the Mississaugas had held onto in the initial land transfer.
The land was then auctioned off in 1827, to William Chisholm, a legislative representative of Upper Canada, and was then officially recognized as Oakville.
In 1962, the area of Oakville was merged with the villages of Bronte, Sheridan and Palmero to form the “New Town of Oakville” and in 1973, the border of Oakville was extended north with the restructuring of Halton County into the Halton Region.
Mr. Chisholm (and later his son), planted the seed that would implement industry in Oakville by planning it’s development, and starting up the first sawmill, gristmill and tavern, and held the duty of postmaster.
This sparked the industry in the area which soon included a foundry, shipbuilding, wheat farming and timber exporting, prompting the extension of the Grand Trunk Railway through the town. A recession hit in the 1850’s causing the foundry to close, and as a result, basket making became a major industry in its place.
Later with the aid of the Canadian National Railway coupled with the transportation routes of the QEW and Highway 403, saw the opening of the Cities Services Canada (now Petro Canada) and Shell Canada refineries in the area, and was also the catalyst of the decision to make Oakville home to the Ford Motor Company’s Canadian operation.
The main employer and driving force of the Oakville economy is the Ford Motor Company of Canada. Doubling as an assembly plant and Canadian Head office, employing more than 3500 workers.
Other major employers in the private sector include Petro-Canada Refinery, (Shell later closed), GE Lighting and York Barbell Co. with the service sector being led by retail heavyweights Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Loblaws.
Oakville has one of the highest ratio’s of private school’s per student in Canada. Oakville’s lone post secondary facility is Sheridan College, known primarily for it’s animation industry and business studies programs.
A city steeped in Arts and Culture, lead by the Oakville Center of the Performing Arts,. Here residents can enjoy (or participate) in the Oakville Ballet Company of Oakville Symphony Orchestra to name a few. The Oakville Museum and Oakville Arts Council supports many programs keeping the arts alive in the community.
Residents of Oakville also enjoy many other annual events throughout the year. In June, the Waterfront Festival will help to celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary .
When most people think of Oakville, Ontario they think of the world renowned Glen Abbey Golf Course. One of Canada’s Crown Jewels of Golf, Glen Abbey was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is home to the annual Canadian Open and houses the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. It is also a premier banquet and event facility.
