Mississauga, Ontario is located in the Peel Region, and with a population in excess of 700,000, making it Canada’s 6th largest city, and one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada, more than doubling in population the last 2 decades.
With direct access to Highways 401, 403, 407, 409, 410, 427 and the Queens Express Way (QEW) makes Mississauga a true hub of the GTA.
Originally in inhabited by the Algonquian and Iroquois tribes along the Credit River, Mississauga is named after a band of Lake Huron natives that drove the Iroquois people away from the area in 1700. The Mississauga tribe occupied the area until 1805, when they sold 84,000 acres of land to officials from York (present day Toronto), then operating as Toronto Township for 1000 British pounds.
In 1806, the area was opened up for formal settlement, and various communities including; Cooksville, Port Credit, Dixie, Erindale and Lakeview were established. A second land purchase was executed in 1820, which marked the arrival of Britiannia, Derry West, Burnhamthorpe, Malton, Meadowvale Village and Streetsville to the area.
Many parcels of land were also granted by the Crown to emigrating U.S. soldiers who fought on behalf of the British during the American Revolution. With all of the expansion and outward population growth, by 1847, the Mississaugas tribe was forced to relocate to a reserve in the Grand River Valley.
In the 1900’s, most of the land that makes up present day Mississauga was agricultural farmland and orchards, used for growing fruit and vegetables which were utilized by the urban dwellers in Toronto. Then in 1937, Malton Airport opened and operated until 1960, when it would become one of the busiest air terminals in the world, now known as Lester B. Pearson International Airport. In 1968, many of the smaller communities were amalgamated to form the Town of Mississauga. In 1974, the remaining communities were annexed in, and officially became incorporated as the City of Mississauga.
Mississaugans as they are affectionately known have been led in their community for the last 30 years by the honorable Hazel McCallion. Mayor McCallion is a recipient of the Order of Canada, and placed 2nd in the “World Mayor” competition held in 2005, and has served 11 straight terms in office.
Even in dealing with the exponential growth of her city, the mayor has kept Mississauga a DEBT FREE community and has not borrowed money since she has been in office which speaks volumes of the economic strength and prosperity of the city.
Mississauga is well known for its salmon fishing in the Credit River at Port Credit, which is considered to be among the best in the world, making it an anglers dream. The city of Mississauga is also home to more than 350 various parks and trails and over 60 different festivals which are held throughout the year.
Mississauga is also a golfers dream, with courses known as much for their beauty as they are for their challenging play, BraeBen Golf Course, a newer 18 hole championship course modeled after the Scottish Highlands and Lakeview Golf Course, which is celebrating it’s 100th year in 2007, is a more traditional layout and considered a “gem” in the Ontario golf community.
The Mississauga skyline is filled with a large quantity of high rise condo’s, and in 2009 the city will welcome the “Absolute World” condo tower. This twin 50 story condo complex designed by Chinese architect Yansong Ma, has been dubbed the “Marilyn Monroe” of towers for it’s curvy sexiness. This “coming soon” landmark for Mississauga, is wildly popular and in high demand with potential buyers.
Other notable Mississauga attractions include the massive Square One Mall which opened in 1974, is a shoppers paradise that also offers many dining options. The Playdium is an arcade/amusement park that is popular with kids and adults alike.
The Hershey Centre, formerly home of the Ontario Hockey League Mississauga IceDogs, will be occupied next year by owner Eugene Melnyk’s St. Michaels Majors. NHL Hall of Famer Paul Coffey, media personality George Stroumboulopoulos, new INXS front man and ROCKSTAR winner J.D. Fortune and world famous jazz musician Oscar Peterson all hail from the region.
