Burlington, Ontario, is located in the Halton Region as part of the Golden Horseshoe. It is considered a component of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), but, is also connected to the Metropolitan Hamilton Area, as it is across the Burlington Bay Harbor and Lake Ontario from the city of Hamilton.

The area lists a population in excess of 160,000, and is one of fastest growing metropolitan areas in not only Ontario, but all of Canada. This is attributed to the influx of many immigrants who are settling in the area in recent years, many of European descent.

The area that we now know as Burlington is comprised of older pioneer communities, some which have retained a unique identity in the current city. Originally, the land was deeded to Chief Joseph Brant in 1798, where settlement was established on the "Brant Block".

Later around 1874, the communities of Wellington Square and Port Nelson were combined, and incorporated as the Village of Burlington. This village would be recognized as a town in 1915, and upon the establishment of the Regional Municipality of Halton in 1974, Burlington was given “City” status.

In the early 1900’s, Burlington was considered “cottage country” for escape by the affluent of Hamilton. A landmark of this heritage is the Paletta Lakefront Mansion. Built in 1930 by Edythe Merriam MacKay, daughter of Cyrus Albert Birge, famous industrialist and owner of the Canadian Screw Company, (which would later merge with 4 other companies to form a conglomerate which would become Stelco in 1910).

This 14 acre waterfront estate is considered the “Jewel in the Crown” of Burlington’s waterfront, located at the mouth of Shoreacres Creek with a breathtaking view of Lake Ontario.

The site is now also considered a historical park, which includes three other buildings: a gatehouse, a “dollhouse“, considered the only known heritage children's playhouse, and one of the last remaining stables.

This area is highly desirable residential area of Burlington, populated with many luxurious homes, and considered to be mostly comprised of upper middle class suburbs in this prestigious lakeshore area.

The city of Burlington boasts a diverse economic base, which is greatly attributed to it being at the “hub” of the Golden Horseshoe. Contributing to the markets of both Southwestern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), has put the city in an enviable position for strong economic growth and prosperity now, and going forward.

The automotive and financial sectors are considered to be the main drivers of the economic success of the area, with many international ties.

Points of interest in the Community of Burlington include the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens, The Joseph Brant Museum, Ireland House, and the Burlington Art Centre which has been host to many exhibits by famous local wildlife artist Robert Bateman.

Another popular Burlington attraction is Spencer Smith Park which is located on the shore of Lake Ontario, and hosts annual events such as Canada’s Largest Rib Fest and the Sound of Musical Festival.

Local organizations for teens include Burlington Area Scouts, a squadron of Royal Canadian Air Cadets, and the Burlington Teen Tour Band, which is celebrating 60 years in 2007. The “Redcoats” as they are affectionately known welcome any young performer between the age of 13 and 21.

Known as “Canada’s Musical Ambassadors” the Redcoats participate in many international parades, bursting with Burlington pride.

Being the hometown of 2 of Hollywood’s finest actors, Jim Carrey, the rubber faced comedian turned serious actor and up and comer Ryan Gosling, both of whom have been recipients of OSCAR nominations for their acting abilities.
