Brantford, Ontario is located in Brant County, named after the historical figure Joseph Brant, who with the Six Nation Indians settled here in 1874. Brantford still is home to a large native population who live in the surrounding area.

Situated along the mighty Grand River, Brantford estimates a population in excess of 90,000, Brantford has a lot to offer, with small town values. Conveniently located on the 403 highway, Brantford is a hub to many other large cities such as Hamilton, Toronto and Niagara Falls and just off the 401 towards London, or up the 24 towards Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo.

A municipal airport is located on the city limits for convenient access to travel. The airport is also hosts to an annual air show which draws a large attendance for the air spectacle. Via Rail and Greyhound Bus Lines are also available for those looking for convenient travel in or out of the city.

Brantford is also serviced by the Grand River Transit local bus line to aid in transportation around the city. Pick up a copy of the daily local paper, The Expositor to catch up on local news and events while you ride.

Once the 3rd largest city in Ontario, Brantford fell on hard times in the 1990’s. Closures of the main manufacturing companies left 1000’s unemployed and caused a local depression.

But, that trend has slowly started to reverse, as Brantford has recently expanded at a rapid rate with large factories such as Proctor and Gamble and Ferraro Roche opening plants and providing economic growth within the city helping to get it back on it’s feet, and there are plans in the works to hopefully enable it to revitalize it’s current “Ghost Town” downtown core.

Brantford is affectionately known as “The Telephone City” as it is home of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. But, when most people think Brantford they think hockey, and when most people think hockey they think of Brantford’s greatest son Wayne Gretzky.

Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Wayne Gretzky still comes home to host various charity events with his father Walter Gretzky who is a great ambassador for the community. Brantford is also home to the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre which is a multi purpose recreational facility.

It offers year round ice for hockey, indoor swimming pool, as well as baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields. Local teams include the 2006 Ontario Inter County Senior Baseball Champion Brantford Red Sox, the 2006-2007 Senior League Champion Brantford Blast hockey club and Junior B Brantford Golden Eagles.

Other points of interest in Brantford are the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts an arts and entertainment theatre that is a host to a wide variety of entertainment.

Also the Jackhammer NightClub (Formerly Little Big Horn of Cambridge), features many big name country artists who perform on occasion. For those that like a little “nightlife” the Brantford Charity Casino is a great place for a night out on the town.

If golf is your passion, there are many mature golf courses throughout the area with the crown jewel being The Brantford Golf and Country club, established in 1879 is the 4th oldest golf course in North America. Sure to challenge the most avid golfer.
