Brampton, Ontario, is located in the Peel Region, and part of the Greater Toronto Area. (GTA). Brampton currently reports a population in excess of 433,000, increasing by more than 33% from 2001, making it one of Canada’s fastest growing municipalities.
This has been a blessing and a curse, as the city has struggled with some infrastructure issues based on it’s exponential growth in such a short period.
Originally referred to as “Buffy’s Corners” as William Buffy’s tavern was the only building in the area of Main and Queen of Chinguacousy Township. This was until 1834, when John Elliott plotted and divided up lots for sale, and in the process, gave name to the area as Brampton, as it is known today. In 1853, the County of Peel set up a fair through the County Agricultural Society, and held it at the corner of Main and Queen.
This fair would be the seed that would grow into not only the Brampton Farmers Market, where vendors market everything from livestock to fruits and vegetables, but would also be the inaugural Brampton Fall Fair, which is still and annual tradition. Later that same year, Brampton would be officially incorporated as a village, and then exactly 20 years later, would be recognized as a town.
In 1974, much to the disappointment of its residents, Bramalea which was formed in the 1960’s as Canada’s first “satellite city” would merge with Brampton and achieve city status. Other communities annexed into modern day Brampton include Chinguacousy Township and Toronto Gore along with Claireville, Ebenezer, Victoria, Springbrook, Churchville, Coleraine, and Huttonville.
The 1980’s saw another boom, when large parcels of land were released to residential developers. This development would later result in the birth of Springdale, which was established in 1995, and is the centre for much of the urban sprawl in the area.

Brampton was formally known as “The Flower Town of Canada” due to it’s large greenhouse influence and popular local business Dale Flowers, which was the recipient of many awards for various international Rose competitions over the last 50 years.
The Peel Memorial Hospital which was founded in 1925, is the province's 6th largest hospital corporation. This is due to the amalgamation of Georgetown and Etobicoke General Hospitals in 1997. A new hospital is in the works to work in conjunction with the existing facilities, and help to take the pressure off of the Peel Hospital due to the rapid growing population of Brampton.
