Belleville, Ontario is known as “The Friendly City”, which translates from French for “Beautiful City” Belleville, located in South Eastern Ontario halfway between Toronto and Ottawa, is part of Hastings County.

Geographically situated at the mouth of the Moira River in the Bay of Quinte along the Windsor-Quebec City Corridor. Belleville itself, combined with the amalgamation of the Township of Thurlow and a portion of the city of Quinte West estimates a population of approximately 46,000.

The 2006 Census reports the metropolitan area to have a population in excess of 91,500. Belleville is the largest urban centre of the Quinte Region, which expands in a 25 mile radius in all directions from the Belleville City centre. The combined Quinte Region lists a total population in the area of 173,000 residents.


Originally a Native settlement known as Asukhknosk, the area was originally settled by United Empire Loyalist in 1789. Later, it became known as “Meyer's Creek” named after prominent settler and industrialist John Walden Meyers.

Myers built a dam on the Moira River which allowed him to erect a sawmill, gristmill and distillery. In addition to these ventures, Myers also operated a trading post and brick kiln, and is credited with building the first brick house in Upper Canada in 1794.

In 1816, it was renamed “Belleville” by British Colonial Sir Francis Gore who at the time was Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in honor of his wife Lady Arabella Gore, and was known as the most prosperous town in Upper Canada based on it‘s growing lumber and flour exporting, by shipping supplies down the St. Lawrence.

The lumber industry peaked with the addition of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1856, which linked Belleville with Toronto and Montreal and allowed for easier distribution. In 1866, with the discovery of gold deposits in nearby Madoc, Belleville was then known as the “Gateway to the Golden North” as it was a stop for miners and prospectors to gather supplies before trekking north in their search of fortune.

Today, Belleville is home to many international companies that supply jobs and support the local economy. Exxon Mobil, Proctor and Gamble, Sears, Wilson Sports, Lipton, Nortel and soon a brand new Kellogg’s production facility in late 2007. Belleville is also the location of the Canadian Forces Post Office, the central location of postal delivery between civilians and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Ontario Social Development Council has voted Quinte Region/Belleville to be the #1 City of Residence in Ontario based on overall strength of social, health, environmental and economical well being.

The July Waterfront and Ethnic Festival is one of the annual highlights of Belleville. Belleville also offers arts in culture in the form of the Belleville Symphony, The Empire and Regent Theatre, and Stirling Festival.
