The town of Ajax is a rapidly growing part of the Golden Horseshoe in South Central Ontario. Situation on the shores of Lake Ontario, in the Durham Region, Ajax is also considered part of the Greater Toronto Area. (GTA).

As of the 2006 Consensus, Ajax estimates a population in excess of 90,000, and has grown exponentially in the last two decades as have most Toronto suburbs . Ajax has the largest underdeveloped waterfront in the whole GTA region.

Ajax was established as a “war born” community during the Second World War. An ammunitions plant for Defense Industries Limited, (DIL), was built in 1941 in the rural farmlands of Pickering Township.

This large shell making plant grew quickly, and employed as many as 9000 at one time, with families from all over Canada picking up to get work at this 3000 acre plant site. With a school, water and sewage and implementation of railroads through the area, the town was built around this quickly established industry powerhouse.

The town name Ajax was taken from one of the ships of a powerful British fleet, the HMS Achilles, HMS Exeter and HMS Ajax, which stood for courage and determination, just like the town that bore its name.

When the war ended in 1945, Ajax continued to thrive, as the University of Toronto leased out the now defunct DIL plant and the war time residences were converted to student housing. The factory along with U of T, used the space to build classrooms and labs, and enrolled the war time workers to help them get new careers, with most choosing the engineering program.

In the next 4 years, some 7000 graduates would pass through the doors before the University closed the doors permanently. At this time, George W. Finley of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Company, (CMHC), put the wheels in motion to expand Ajax as a “Planned Community“.

The 1970’s would see the next boom of the town. In 1972, the province moved to amalgamate Ajax with parts of Pickering Township in the creation of the Durham Region.

This extension grew the town boundaries to encompass to the borders of Whitby to the East and Brock Road to the West, growing more than 5 times it’s size from the original 3000 acres of the DIL plant to more than 16,000 acres of land area. In 1974, the Durham Region and Town of Ajax were officially recognized.

Ajax is home to Volkswagen Canada headquarters as well as DuPont Paint, which are the major employers in the private sector. The Public Sector, the biggest employers are the Town of Ajax and the Rouge Valley Health Care System.

Ajax is also a commonly used location used for filming movies and television shows and commercials due to it’s diverse and beautiful locations. In the past few years, the town has recently opened the Slots at Ajax Downs, a large gaming facility and horse racing.

Ajax, is well known for it’s support of arts and culture. With a Cultural Arts Advisory Committee, the Pine Ridge Arts Council and the Durham West Arts Centre, the arts are alive and well in the community with many opportunities for residents to explore their creative sides.

The Integrated Community Arts and Culture Plan was implemented in July 2006 to support the arts in the community.
